The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is a regulatory agency in Nigeria mandated to safeguard public health by ensuring the quality, safety, efficacy, and wholesome use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, and chemicals. NAFDAC was established in 1993 under the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Act Cap N1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004.

Key functions and responsibilities of NAFDAC include:

  1. Product Registration: NAFDAC is responsible for the registration, licensing, and approval of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, and chemicals intended for sale, distribution, or use in Nigeria. This involves evaluating product formulations, manufacturing processes, labeling, and packaging to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  2. Quality Control: NAFDAC conducts quality control tests, inspections, and audits of regulated products and manufacturing facilities to verify compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and other quality standards. This includes sampling and testing products for contaminants, adulterants, and substandard ingredients.
  3. Regulatory Compliance: NAFDAC enforces regulations and guidelines governing the production, importation, exportation, distribution, advertising, and sale of regulated products in Nigeria. This includes monitoring compliance with labeling requirements, advertising standards, and promotional claims.
  4. Pharmacovigilance: NAFDAC monitors the safety of medicines and vaccines in Nigeria through pharmacovigilance activities, including the collection, analysis, and reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and other safety concerns. This helps identify potential risks associated with the use of pharmaceutical products and take appropriate regulatory actions to protect public health.
  5. Public Awareness and Education: NAFDAC conducts public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and community outreach initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of safe food and drug use, counterfeit medicines, and other health-related issues. This empowers consumers to make informed decisions and protect themselves from health risks.
  6. Collaboration and Partnerships: NAFDAC collaborates with other government agencies, international organizations, industry stakeholders, healthcare professionals, and civil society groups to enhance regulatory capacity, share information, and coordinate efforts to promote public health and safety.
