National Institute Of Pharmacy Research And Development

The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) is a Nigerian institution charged with developing drugs, biological products, and pharmaceutical raw materials, conducting quality-assurance tests, research for locally manufactured medicines and constituting guidelines for their production. Founded in 1987, it was a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2001, it was moved to Federal Ministry of Health.

FUNCTION OF THE NIPRD ARE:

  1. Development: Engaging in the development of new pharmaceutical products, dosage forms, drug delivery systems, and technologies to improve drug efficacy, safety, and patient adherence.
  2. Training and Education: Providing training programs, workshops, and continuing education courses for pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, and other healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in pharmacy practice and research.
  3. Collaboration: Collaborating with academic institutions, research organizations, pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and international partners to foster innovation, share expertise, and address healthcare challenges.
  4. Policy Advocacy: Contributing to the development of pharmaceutical policies, regulations, and guidelines to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of pharmaceutical products and promote rational drug use.
  5. Public Health Initiatives: Supporting public health initiatives related to pharmaceuticals, such as drug affordability, access to essential medicines, antimicrobial resistance, and pharmaceutical care services.
  6. Undertake research and development work on drugs, biological products including vaccines and pharmaceutical raw materials from indigenous natural resources and by synthesis using appropriate science and technology methodologies
  7. Conduct appropriate investigations and consequent applications in the areas of evaluation, preservation, purification, standardization, safety and rational utilization of traditional medicine.
  8. Develop methodologies for quality assessment of biological products, orthodox and herbal medicines including their raw materials.
  9. Serve as reference centre for research work on the biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, storage and stability of imported and locally manufactured drugs and biological products.
  10. Conduct research and development work into pharmaceutical biotechnology, nutrition, cosmetics and environmental science for improved quality of life and the conservation of medicinal and aromatic plants.
  11. Establish and operate a quality assurance laboratory for pharmaceutical raw materials and products.
  12. Promote and sponsor staff development; through training courses, workshops, and fellowship within and outside Nigeria.
