National Population Commission
(NPC) | Profile

The NPC is the primary agency responsible for conducting censuses and managing population data in Nigeria.

About NPC:

Established in 1988, the National Population Commission operates under the Federal Government of Nigeria with the mandate to provide demographic data essential for national planning, policy formulation, and resource allocation. The commission plays a critical role in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating population information to support evidence-based decision-making and development initiatives.

Key Functions:

  1. Population Census: NPC conducts periodic population censuses to gather comprehensive data on the size, distribution, and characteristics of Nigeria’s population. These censuses provide valuable insights into demographic trends, population growth rates, and social indicators.
  2. Vital Registration: NPC oversees the registration of vital events such as births, deaths, marriages, and divorces, ensuring accurate recording and documentation of vital statistics for legal and administrative purposes.
  3. Population Data Analysis: NPC analyzes population data collected through censuses, surveys, and other sources to generate demographic profiles, population projections, and thematic reports. These analyses help policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners understand population dynamics and trends.
  4. Data Dissemination: NPC disseminates population data and research findings to government agencies, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the general public through publications, reports, workshops, and online platforms.
