The Office of the Auditor General of the Federation (OAuGF) is a government institution responsible for auditing the accounts of all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) of the federal government of Nigeria. It operates under the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) and the Audit Act.
The primary function of the OAuGF is to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public funds. It conducts financial audits, performance audits, and compliance audits to assess whether government entities are using public resources efficiently, effectively, and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
The Auditor General of the Federation, who heads the office, is appointed by the President of Nigeria and serves as an independent officer. The findings of the audits conducted by the OAuGF are presented in annual reports submitted to the National Assembly and the President. These reports serve as valuable tools for oversight, decision-making, and improving governance in Nigeria.
